Trust Us With Your Child's Oral Health

At Birch Street Dental Care, we aim to keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime. This is why we stress on your child visiting us no later than their third birthday. The first dental visit of your child entails very little or no treatment, as the goal is to give your child a chance to get to know the dentist in a friendly, non-threatening way.

During this visit, the dentist will:

  • Thoroughly examine your child’s teeth for tooth decay
  • Examine your child’s gums and soft tissue for disease or problems
  • Evaluate your child’s bite
  • Identify any potential problems
  • Show you how to properly clean your child’s gums and teeth at home
  • Answer any questions or concerns

First-Visit Tips

  • Take your child for a preview of the office
  • Read books with them about going to the dentist
  • Discuss with them about what the dentist will be doing at the time of the first visit
  • Speak positively about your own dental experiences

Preventative Care for Children's Oral Health

Our dentists offer different preventative measures for your children at various stages of their development. One of our most common practices is to place dental sealants on six- and twelve-year molars.

A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the surface of a tooth that seals the cracks and grooves shut to prevent cavities from forming in the future.

We also offer your kids fluoride treatments, which are given twice yearly to make the adult teeth very strong while they are forming. Fluoride is a natural element that occurs naturally, both in foods and in water and is generally very beneficial for your teeth. Additionally, it helps prevent plaque buildup on the surface of your teeth and prevents decay on baby teeth. Contact us today to book your appointment. We also offer same-day and walk-in appointments for new patients.

Cavity Prevention Services

Cavities can be caused when you consume a diet high in sugary foods and drinks, and when you do not brush and floss regularly.

Here are a few tips:

  • Give your child healthy snack foods, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and cheese.
  • Buy foods that are sugar-free or unsweetened.
  • Serve sugary or starchy foods as part of a meal rather than as a snack.
  • Try to avoid sticky foods unless your child plans to brush right after he or she eats them.
  • Teach your children to be free of cavities and have happy, healthy teeth. Please call us today to schedule an appointment for your child.

Protective Dental Sealants

A dental sealant is a thin, tooth-colored acrylic that's painted on the surface of the tooth. They are highly effective in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth and are also used to patch small grooves or holes in the teeth.

This protective coating (made from plastic and other dental material) seals the grooves of your teeth, thereby making it much more difficult for plaque to get stuck in those areas in the future. As a result, brushing your teeth becomes significantly more effective and your risk of cavities will drastically decrease as well.

Sealants can also be useful for adults in certain situations, but they are generally applied to children’s permanent back teeth. A sealant will typically last up to five years; however, some adults still have their childhood sealants completely intact.

I've been going to Birch Street Dental for over 30 years. I would not go anywhere else. Love the dentists and my hygienist. Now, with Dr. Jacob and his wife joining the group, I know that my dental needs will be taken good care of for the rest of my life. Everyone who works there is exceptional.
